This classic eggnog is rich, smooth, and perfectly spiced. You can serve it warm or chilled, and it works wonderfully with or without alcohol. Ready in minutes and perfect for holidays, winter nights, or when you just crave something comforting.
π₯ Ingredients
For 4 servings:
4 large egg yolks
1/3 cup granulated sugar
2 cups whole milk
1 cup heavy cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Optional: pinch of cinnamon
Optional (adult version): 1/2 cup rum, bourbon, or brandy
π₯ Instructions
1. Whisk the yolks
In a mixing bowl, whisk the egg yolks until smooth and slightly pale. Slowly add sugar and continue whisking until creamy.
2. Heat the milk mixture
In a saucepan, combine milk, cream, nutmeg, and cinnamon (if using). Heat gently on medium until warm β donβt let it boil.
3. Temper the eggs
Slowly pour about 1/2 cup of the warm milk into the egg mixture while whisking constantly.
This prevents the eggs from scrambling.
4. Combine and cook
Pour the tempered egg mixture back into the pot. Cook on medium-low, stirring continuously, until the mixture slightly thickens and coats the spoon.
(Usually 3β5 minutes.)
5. Add vanilla & cool
Remove from heat, stir in vanilla, and let it cool.
If you want to add alcohol, mix it in once the mixture cools down a bit.
6. Chill or serve warm
Serve immediately for a cozy warm drink, or refrigerate for a few hours for classic chilled eggnog.
Top with a sprinkle of nutmeg!
π Tips for Perfect Eggnog
If you prefer extra thick eggnog, add 1β2 more tablespoons of cream.
For a lighter version, use 2% milk instead of whole milk.
Strain the mixture before chilling for the smoothest texture.
Use freshly grated nutmeg for the best flavor.
